If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.

VLC media player is the most successful free open source multimedia player out there with over 500 million downloads according to the developers. In particular, VLC media player is a great alternative to Windows Media Player, iTunes, and RealPlayer. It's lightweight, fast, easy to use and most importantly, plays almost anything.

It's been two and a half years since version 1.0 was released and version 2 ("Twoflower") brings a new interface, faster decoding, support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things, VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG toFLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.

Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com. Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.

VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.

Finally, the interface has been somewhat improved in version 2 although it remains strictly functional. However, you can download skins to completely change VLC media player's appearance. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.

Photoscape is a free photo editing

 software created in a user-friendly 

manner. I would say it's an all-in-one 

application that offers all the basics to 

fix or  enhance your collection of 

photos. 

From the beginning you are amazed by its simplicity and unique design which 

gives you total control of the editing tools. Every major function is represented 

by a tab which uses the same window like all the others. In this way you have 

different major modules into a single executable so you can instantly access the 

viewer, the editor, or the animated GIF function. 

The first contact with this application is a childish experience, but as you go 

deeper into its options you will discover its complexity. It delivers a set of 

editing tools such as Red Eye Correction, Paint Brush, Clone Stamp. But also 

some enhancing tools like Page (you can create a collage based on defined 

layers), Combine (you can create posters from several images bound together), 

or Animated GIF (you can create a GIF sequence by using you own photos). 

Let's not forget the batch editor, the screen capture tool or the RAW converter. 

Theoretically, Photoscape can run on any computer configuration if you take 

also in consideration the portable edition of it, but you should be aware that 

the support for Win95, Win98, WinMe has been discontinued since version 3.5. 

Pluses: user-friendly interface, lots of premium editing tools. 

Drawbacks / flaws: If you work with more than one project active, the 

application consumes additional memory. You can easily use up to 300,000 Kb 

of used memory. 

In conclusion: It's still a mystery how such a great application is free. You get 

so much for nothing compared to other similar software which can cost you 

around 29$, or maybe $49.

This funky piece of software also offers users the option of creating a DOS start-up disk, by 

either using the internal MS-DOS system files, or the ones located at a specific path.

Oh! and before we forget, this format tool also allows you to rename all your USB flash 

drives in any way you want and offers a NTFS volume label for format which enable you to 

create a FAT32 volume which is bigger than 32GB. Cool hey?

Pro's: 

USB flash drives just got that little bit better.

Con's: 

We haven’t found any yet!

Conclusion:

The HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool blows us away because by deleting 

space used on flash drivers that cannot be removed in the traditional way, and creating 

bootable USB drives it brings enhanced power and functionality to your system without 

costing you the earth. If you use flash drives, then don't delay and get it today.

it.

For example, the makers of ‘Spiderman 2’ 

used Blender for 3D and character animation;

Dream’, ‘Big Buck Bunny’, ‘Sintel’ and

 ‘Plumiferos’ a 3D CG feature film were made

 in Blender; as was the 3D game ‘Yo Frankie!’

Blender comes from the not-for-profit Blender Foundation. It is open-source, free to download

 and use but requires a considerable investment of time and effort from the serious user and 

rewards her with the flexible software and skills to model in 2 and 3D, animate, render and 

process images and videos to an award-winning professional standard. It includes related 

functionality: a game engine, fonts, motion capture and many, many more.

A good place to start is to become familiar with the interface which has been reworked in the 

recent 2.61 version. Support comes in the way of texts, models and tutorials from the official 

website. A CMS gathers background information and lists many websites and groups 

maintained by Blender followers, (Blender Art Magazine, Blender Nation, and so on). If that is

 not enough a shelf of specialist commercial books offers guidance through the Blender 

product.

As for the software, by its nature it is resource hungry, but bug-free. Learned and professional 

users consider Blender to be a match or more for other pay-for packages. 

Pros: 

Undo and Redo support at all levels; immensely capable toolset; ardent community; fully 

configurable user interface. 

Cons: 

Size and complexity. 

Conclusions: 

This is a conceptual product whose primary audience is the professional 

designer. Its focus is 3D animation, but it extends beyond. It demands a commitment to 

learning it. It may be free to download and use, but unless you prepare for the road ahead you

 may find yourself unable to get the most out of it; and there is a great deal to get from this

The Autodesk DWG Trueview is a design programme aimed at engineers and 

architects, as a means of easily viewing their designs. The programme is useful for 

users as it allows you to view, print and publish DXF and DWG documents from 

design software such as AutoCAD. It also lets you measure drawings accurately, 

share drawings and change their frame, shadowing, zoom etc and is an easy to use 

and, perhaps most importantly, free programme with a clean and simple interface. 

Pros: Freeware, lets you share graphics and drawings created with AutoCAD, lets you

 publish DWF files in 3D, lets you track your changes, fast user response, compatible 

with new and old versions of AutoCAD, easy to use for non-industry users.

Cons: No updates, took a long time to download, no ongoing support, associates 

filename extensions needlessly with the programme, basic no-frills interface, trouble 

with installation could be down to incompatibility with updated Microsoft .NET 

framework.


Conclusion: Autodesk DWG Trueview is a great programme if you want to view, print and publish your documents in a simple, no frills manner or if you're wanting a quick 

fix programme for free. There are better pay-for design programmes out there for 

engineers and architects but this is a good backup for users home or portable 

computers.
